The Nancengka Social Place

I get why Stackoverflow eventually implementing AI on their platform.

Its because they saw the traffic drops at their website since peoples felt more convenient to ask AI for coding help rather than searching & reading manually.

As usual, we're now live at 'AI-tification' era. Not need to be surprised.

An article on Gizmodo titled : "Stack Overflow traffic drops as coders opt for ChatGPT help instead."

"Stack Overflow saw a 14% drop in traffic month over month from March to April 2023, according to data analytics firm SimilarWeb."

@bandarbaru_1 gak pakai chatgpt sih, tapi kemarin sempat pakai fitur AI assistant di situs kuliah online buat memecahkan soal pemrograman.

Ternyata cukup berguna.

Oh yeah, I think not only Stackoverflow too. Most of peoples now using GitHub and what I know so far, they using our codes & projects to train their AI.

Are we need to be supposed to delete our accounts on there? since many open source projects is still hosted on GitHub.

🤔

@[email protected] move to self-hosted option where source code are more a bit decentralized instead of everyone putting it in one basket (github)

one of the example, forgejo from disroot
https://git.disroot.org/

@ganbold Yep, Forgejo. I think this is better too for a company who usually creating a private repository and they wanna to keep their code only at their hands rather than uploading and hosted to somewhere else.

And yep, I also see this is an alternative of GitLab self-hosting solution.

@ganbold But my main concern in my previous toot is about community projects that many of them is still hosted at GitHub to attract more contributors.

They can use Codeberg, but as far as I can see, usually Codeberg is used for mirror rather than become main repository.

I still wonder why. Maybe there are only few peoples wanna to contribute there? People lazy to create another new account? or something else?

🤔

@[email protected] I see

I myself think it has a lot of factors, here are my own perspective:
- github has something like a racing game, where people want to show off that they could contribute to open source. it will shown in their profile too. as the perspective of new contributors, this might be the main reason to keep using github
- thanks to the 1st reason, main contributor might keep using github because there are plenty of contributors
- github provides the payment so that people can directly contribute money to the maintainer/project. hassle-free for people who don't want to create another account for crowdsourcing.
- sponsor might paid them and ask them to use github, such possibility exist
- self-hosting git server also not easy, and kinda not as reliable as the big company one did. codeberg has been down few times in these past 6 months thus people mirror it. github also well-known for shutting down some repo/user, so a good way to mirror their repo to other instance

@[email protected] @[email protected] - GitHub provide free CI, bagi kompi saya yang ga kuat2 amat dan ga punya waktu untuk nyala terus, free is free
